NERONE by Arrigo Boito – Opera in 4 acts - in Italian
ROME IS BURNING!
Nero is the absolute ruler, beloved but feared by the Roman people. More interested in fame as an immortal artist than carrying out his political duties, he glosses over his weaknesses – and that's what really makes him dangerous. For behind the façade of the aesthete lurks a gruesome, insatiable, and blood-thirsty dictator.
Premiere:
July 10, 2010, in the Amphitheater
Additional performances: July 12, July 14, July 16, and July 18, 2010

Drama: Oedipus the King/Antigone by Sophocles
It all began with the ancient tragedy! In his two great dramas, Oedipus the King and Antigone, Sophocles, as almost no other writer after him, brings philosophical and ethical questions of humanity onto the stage, questions whose immediacy seems only to have increased through the centuries. At the same time, both dramas are part of a family history: Oedipus, the unfortunate ruler of Thebes, falls victim to the same curse as his daughter Antigone: As guilty innocents, they must perish.
Premiere:
